The Vehicle of Expression
The Vehicle of Expression (V.O.E.) was an on-ice art shanty with a literary bent. It's a bus, actually: a vehicle for writers and readers of poetry, drama, and literature in its many forms. The V.O.E. was host to a variety of writing activities, readings, and even theatrical performances during the Art Shanty Projects 2017.
El Mercado del Gran Kermesse (Windom Spanish Dual Immersion Elementary, MN)
With colleagues, designed and created toys, jewelry, and cultural items for Windom's Mercado del Gran Kermesse.
Nordic Village Bridge Art Shanty (Art Shanty Projects, MN)
With colleagues, designed, constructed, and transported a Three Billy Goats Gruff-themed ice-fishing house and ran four weekends of interactive programming as part of the Art Shanty Projects on Medicine Lake.
Retablos Project (Windom Spanish Dual Immersion Elementary, MN)
Worked 300 students (K-3) to create devotional shrines dedicated to the literary heroes of children’s literature.
Nordic Immersion Art Shanty(Art Shanty Projects,MN)
With colleagues, designed, constructed, and transported a Nordic themed ice-fishing house and ran four weekends of interactive programming as part of the Art Shanty Projects on Medicine Lake.
Viking Archaeological Dig & Sand Casting (Leiv Eriksson Festival/Mindekirken, MN)
Ran an archeological dig for children, in which they excavated Viking age artifacts and made their own plaster replicas using the process of sand casting.
Weaving Project (Windom Spanish Dual Immersion Elementary)
Worked with the art department to build and string 28 frame looms, with which we taught grades K-5 (~400 students) basic techniques in weaving and pattern design.
Carpeted Map of Europe (Europe Day, Minnesota History Center, MN)
Created a to-scale jigsaw map of Europe out of carpet pieces, along with a brief activity guide for children attending Europe Day as part of Family Day at the Minnesota History Center.
24 Hour Play Project (Theatre Unbound, MN)
Engaged in three short plays (once as an actor, twice as a playwright) in which the audience provides key ingredients for a play that is collaboratively written and rehearsed in a 24 hour window of time.
Mississippi Heritage Day Plays (Workhouse Theatre, Minneapolis)
Wrote three original audience participation plays (Heritage Monologues, Mississippi Running, and Just So, Mississippi) about the history of North Minneapolis, performed at the Kroening Interpretive Center, North Mississippi Regional Park.
